According to data released last Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in Maryland last year was $70,004, the highest in the nation. The average household income nationally is $50,502.
As far as individual County rankings within the State, Howard County ranked highest (#5 Nationally) with a median household income of $98,953, followed by Montgomery County ($92,909), Anne Arundel County ($84,138) and Carroll County reporting $84,117. 7.8% of households in Maryland reported an annual median income of $200,000 or more.
Strong incomes in Maryland are attributed primarily to our close proximity to the Nation's capitol and the government jobs that go with it. In fact, 7 of the top 10 "wealthiest" counties are suburbs of Washington, D.C. In neighboring Virginia, Loudoun, Arlington and Fairfax counties were ranked at #1, #2, and #3 in the Country.
