Ask the Realtor: What is a lockbox?

A lockbox is a great way to encourage other agents to show your home. This small box attaches around your doorknob to store a key to your home. This means an agent can show your home even when you aren’t there, and without the hassle of stopping by the listing agent’s office to pick up a key.

Here’s how it works: The box is connected wirelessly to the Internet to transmit information to your listing agent, including which selling agents have entered your home and for how long they stayed there. A lockbox is accessible only with a specific card (like an ATM card) that is issued annually to an agent by the state’s licensing agency. Agents are required to log on to the Internet each week to gain individualized entry codes that work in tandem with their cards.
